Except Sustainability Academy

Facilitated working sessions

Except Academy runs working sessions for groups that have to decide something together, using Symbiosis in Development, the same method the courses teach.

A wide arc of tables with about thirty people seated at microphones, a presentation on screen and daylight through the glazed wall behind.

How a session runs

The group maps the system together on one large sheet of paper, standing around it, and works out where to intervene on the drawing itself.

A session follows the five steps of the method, fitted to the time available. The group agrees what it is aiming at and how it would know, maps what is there, works out how that behaves, decides where a change would do the most, and leaves with the start of a roadmap.

In Heineken's 100% Circular program a multidisciplinary team of seventeen from Heineken and Except worked through directions, ambitions, vision and goals guided by SiD.

"... all of them seem to have a few sensitive influence points through which the behavior of the system can be changed. These influence points are not in the location where most people expect."

Who is it for

Leadership groups starting a sustainability program, teams that keep arriving at the same disagreement, and project teams working with stakeholders who do not report to them.

At the end of a session

  1. A map of the system, made by the group

  2. Agreed goals, and the focus areas that follow

  3. The structure of a roadmap, with the first projects named
